Moving a Moving Company: What Movers Do When They Have to Move

Posted on: 14 February 2017

When a moving company has to move, do they just move themselves? Do they hire other movers to help them move? How does that work? If you are a newly established moving company whose business has exploded and you need to move to get more room, you might be wondering this very question. After all, you do not want to shut down operations for a day or two while your business relocates because that takes the trucks and services out of the hands of the customers. Here is how this particular and sometimes awkward moving situation is handled.

Form an Alliance or Pact with Another Moving Company

Countries in the U.N. do this all the time. They have needs that only another country can provide, even if those needs are one-time events. Likewise, you may not need to move again for some time when you move your moving business into a larger space. Ergo, find another moving company that has the ability, the trucks and the spare manpower to help you move. Then formulate an alliance or pact with that company that allows you both to do business but not tread on the other's toes. You can agree to help each other out once in a while (e.g., they help you move into a bigger space, you lend them an extra truck or two when they have their trucks in the shop, etc.).

Decide How Many Trucks and Employees to Allocate to the Move

Next, determine how you and your alliance can best move your entire company in one day. How many trucks of what size does that take, and how many can be spared to do the job and not impede each other's usual order of business? Also, be sure to allocate enough employees for the move without removing too many from the moving jobs that are already scheduled on the day you plan to move your business. This may require paying overtime to off-duty employees if you and your alliance cannot spare enough previously-scheduled people that day.

Begin Packing a Month in Advance

Since you want your move to be as hassle-free and as smooth as possible, begin packing a month in advance. This is typically the same advice you give customers, only now you have to follow it yourself. Set all of your packed boxes aside in the office, leaving only the bare necessities with which to conduct business. Then load and move on moving day--that is it.
